July 31 2020 - In these challenging times, the Kansas Chapter of HIMSS is celebrating SysAdmins acrossed Kansas on SysAdmin Day.  Thank you for all that you do.

The Kansas Chapter of HIMSS board has carefully considered the options and a decision is never easy to make. However, as the result of multiple considerations, the 2020 KSHIMSS Chapter Conference scheduled for May 7 & 8 will be cancelled.

Kansas HIMSS joins a long list of institutions that are cancelling events to protect the health and safety of attendees and to support the wider public effort to slow the spread of the virus. Those that registered will be issued a full refund of their conference registration within a few business days. We encourage you address any room accommodations as soon as possible to prevent penalty for late cancellation.

Thank you to each member of the Board of Directors for all their hard work, especially our Events co-chairs Mia Kauffman and Shavonda Thrower, and President-Elect Tami Corn.

The board will begin working to plan the 2021 KSHIMSS Chapter Conference with details to be provided at a later date. Please contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Shawn Weldin
President, KSHIMSS

Dear Veterans (this also includes any active duty, reservists, National Guard members and your families),
Today, we celebrate you. We thank you for your service and your sacrifices. Whether you lost a limb, a friend or spent entirely too much time away from your families, you paid an unimaginable cost so that we can retain the freedoms given to us by the United States Constitution.
Each night when we tuck ourselves into bed and fall fast asleep without worry or fear, it’s because of you. You took oaths and made promises to keep us safe, and you’ve kept them. No matter your branch of service, rank or job title, YOU are appreciated. In all honesty, there’s no way that we could ever thoroughly express our gratitude. So, instead, we simply say “thank you”, and we hope you know how much we mean it.

Congratulations to Dr. Sam Antonios!  He has qualified for HIMSS fellow.

Dr. Antonios is Medical Director for Information Systems, CDI and CM physician advisor at Via Christi since 2012. KSHIMSS new mentoring project to offer mentors to students is off to a great start.  During our chapter spring event in May we signed up two students to have mentors with seasoned veterans in the health care IT field.

Bailey Boucek (student) mentored by Allen Laramore with KaMMCO and Bidisha Roy (student) mentored by Amanda Vandervoort with Pratt Regional Medical Center.  Watch for future articles to learn more about the mentoring project.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment today recognized two Kansas hospitals for their support of the Kansas Syndromic Surveillance Program (KSSP). Labette Health, a 99-bed hospital in Parsons, and Wesley Medical Center, a 760-bed hospital in Wichita, received the recognitions at the annual meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society in Wichita, May 3-4, 2018.

The two hospitals were recognized for complete and timely reporting of electronic health record (EHR) data to KSSP. As a result, both hospitals have contributed to the protection of the community by maintaining data quality and responding quickly to quality improvement issues.

“By participating in the Syndromic Surveillance Program, these hospitals help make a difference for public health in Kansas,” said KDHE Secretary Jeff Andersen. “Labette Health and Wesley Medical Center deserve this recognition for their hard work and diligence in this important area.”

In Kansas 79 hospitals submit data to KSSP via their EHR system. Deidentified data from participating hospitals containing the patient's chief complaint information arrives within hours of the patient's arrival to an emergency department.  From that information, KDHE's Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics successfully tracked influenza and pneumonia activity over the flu season and has worked to ensure all measles cases have been identified in the current Eastern Kansas measles outbreak.

The receipt of EHR information from hospitals participating in Syndromic Surveillance and other public health registries, reportable diseases, cancer registry, and immunization registry, has assisted the agency's efforts to protect public health.

Dr Sam Antonios, MD, FACP, FHM, CCDS, Medical Director for Information Systems, CDI and CM physician advisor at Via Christi since 2012 will speak on day one of the KSHIMSS conference on the 2019 proposed rule: Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS).  We have a few seats left, there is still time to register and come learn more about IPPS.   Visit http://kansas.himsschapter.org/ to learn more or register today!

KSHIMSS Board of Directors

I am torn about my time as Kansas Chapter of HIMSS president coming to an end after two years. I so enjoyed serving our organization in the leadership role and will miss it. We grew our membership double digits each year, continued to expand the quality and content of our educational and conference offerings, and expanded the communication of the benefits of being a member.
However, the good of my transition far outweighs the bad. We could not ask for a better president than Michelle McGuire. Michelle has been helping with many of the president's responsibilities for some time and is primed to take the organization to the next level. We also have several current and future leaders on our Board. Simply going down the list of Board members gives me
a tremendous amount of confidence that our Chapter is in safe hands.
It is the support of these individuals that made my job easy. I thank everyone for their tremendous time and energy over the last two years and am excited to see where we head from here.
Onward and Upward!
Chris Wilson

Welcome to the first issue of the Kansas Chapter of HIMSS e-newsletter.

The leadership of the Kansas Chapter of HIMSS has identi-fied the newsletter as a way
to keep members informed of healthcare technology, up-coming events and chapter news.

The board members are ex-cited to provide this tool for communication and corre-spondence with members.

We welcome your feedback and ideas. If you have any topics that you would like published in the newsletter, suggestions or have any ques-tions or concerns about what you have read, please reach out to our Communications & Web Chair, Tami Corn at tcorn@srhc.com.

Fellow KSHIMSS Chapter members:

I am looking forward to serving as the chapter president for the next two years. As incoming president I would like noth- ing better than to meet each of you this year at one of our chapter events.

Under Chris Wilson and the board of directors leadership the last two years our chapter has grown and is flourishing. Our chapter has grown to 426 members strong and is growing every month. Our outstanding board of directors take their job seriously to provide quality programing so you can get the most out of your KSHIMSS Chapter member- ship. We are always looking for ways to provide value to the membership.

The new board term starts July 1, we have a nice mix of long standing board members and some new blood bringing in new energy and ideas. We have ambitious goals for the 2017 - 2019 board term. We are starting a chapter newsletter, we have already started work on the education confer- ence we hold in the
spring. Mark your calendars now to save the dates of May 3rd and 4th 2018, this event will be held in Wichita, KS.

We have a brand new Student/ Early career chair this term. We have made a commitment to provide scholarships to our chapter events for Kansas un- dergraduate students that would like to attend.

National HIMSS has a track to help military personal transi- tioning to civilian jobs to enter the Health IT field. Our chapter is on the lookout for the right person to be our new Board of Directors Military Chairperson. This person will have a military background and an interest in helping others learn what HIMSS has to offer Veterans interested in Health IT. If you fit this back- ground please reach out to me.

We are working to encourage our members to take ad- vantage of HIMSS national offerings such as applying to be a HIMSS Fellow. Getting the CPHIMSS certification and submitting a proposal to speak at the HIMSS national convention.

If you have not been involved in our chapter the place to start is by reaching out to myself, mcguire200@yahoo.com, or Shawn Weldin, sweld- in@sabethahospital.com, the chapter vice president. We welcome your ideas and we will find a place for you to get involved.
